List of Locations (Sites)
A Location (sometimes called a Site) is the address where some sort of service is carried out. A location is different to a Customer, which is the name and address of the person or company paying for the service.
Moving around the window
You can click with the mouse, or use the following key strokes:
Press the Tab key to move from one field to the next.
Press Shift-Tab (hold down the Shift key and press the Tab key) to move backwards.
To move between tabs (By Site Code, By Site Name etc), press Ctrl-Tab (hold down the Ctrl key and press the Tab key). This changes the order in which sites are displayed (see below).
Where you see an underlined letter, pressing the Alt key and the underlined letter has the same effect as clicking on the letter. (e.g. to click on Add Temporary), hold down the Alt key and press the A key. These keys are called accelerator keys.
Searching for a location
There are two methods you can use to search for a site.
1. By filling in one or more of the boxes at the top of the window.

- Entries that start with that entry will be displayed. For example, entering a Street Name of Smith will display entries where the street name is ‘Smith St’, ‘Smith Ave’, ‘Smithsonian St’ etc.
- Put a % sign in front of the entry to find entries that contain that entry. For example, entering %mit will display entries like Smith and Mitchell
-
To search for letters in a specific position, use _ (underline). For example, entering _est in the Site Name box will list sites starting with West or Best.
-
To move between boxes, use the Tab and Shift-Tab (hold down the Shift key and press the Tab key).
-
Performance tip: searches using the % or _ signs are usually slower than other searches. To speed them up, reduce the number of sites in the list by selecting another box first. For example, entering SYD in the Suburb box and then %lane in the Street Name box will quickly list all lanes in central Sydney.
-
Press F4 to clear the search.
2. By clicking in the list and then starting to type the entry you’re looking for.
The item being searched for will depend on which tab is selected. For example, if By Street is selected, when you key sm the first street beginning with those letters will be displayed. As you type additional letters the list will move closer to the entry you’re seeking.
You can change tabs by clicking on the tab, pressing Ctrl-Tab (see above), using the accelerator key (see above), clicking in the matching column, or pressing the left or right arrow keys while the list is highlighted..
Restricting list by State
Choose a state from the drop list to show only locations in that state. Unlike the other filter settings, this one is saved when you close the window and restored when you next open the window. If locations seem to be missing from the list, check that you have the State selector set to 'ALL'.
Selecting the state of 'VIC' in the list of sites selects sites from 'TAS' too.
Suspended or Inactive Locations
Locations which have been suspended or inactive are highlighted in red in the list of Locations (to set a Location as suspended or inactive, enter a date in the Suspended or Inactive field on the Location Details window). If you select a Location which is suspended or inactive (e.g. for a job) you will be asked to confirm that you want to select that Location.
Warranty Status
In the list of locations, the warranty status takes warranty on individual panels into account. If all panels, or the location as a whole, is under warranty, the location is coloured green in the list. If one or more panels (but not the entire location) are under warranty, the location is coloured blue.
Service Providers List
Click the Service Providers button to show a list of Service Providers for the highlighted Location. You can move to a different location in the list of locations without closing this Service Provider window, and the list of Service Providers for the new Location will be displayed.
If the location doesn't appear in the list.
Depending on your access level and which part of Smart you are in, you may be able add a new location by clicking the right mouse button in the list of locations and selecting 'Add'.
In some parts of Smart an Add Temporary button will appear. Clicking this button will provide a window where you can enter some basic details about the location so you can get a job underway and the rest of the details can be added later.
The billing options for a temporary location are affected by the following settings:
- These settings affect only users with Operator level access.
- If 'Must Not' is chosen, the only option is 'specified later'.
- If 'Must' is specified, the operator must specify a customer to bill to in order to exit the window.
- In the Operator Configuration window, Temporary Location/Allow to Bill Location: If this is set to No the ' As Above' option is disabled.
- The 'Alarm Company' option is only enabled if the operator specifies an alarm company for the location and the alarm company is linked to a customer account (see Alarm Company Details).
For locations which are added as 'temporary' Smart generates a site code with an asterisk (*) as the first character. This is so temporary locations can be checked later to confirm that they do not already exist in the Smart database.
A location's site code can be changed at any time without affecting the history or integrity of your Smart system. If the location already exists (with a different site code or different spelling) the new location can be merged with the existing one (see below).
Location Merge:You can merge two Locations together. In the list of Locations, highlight the Location to be merged and deleted, and press the Merge button (lower left). In the window that appears, press the Select Location button to select the Location to be merged into. Press the Continue button to merge the Locations.
-
All information linked to the first Location will be linked to the second Location. This includes Location contacts, service providers, incidents, jobs, keys, and all other Location-related information.
-
The first Location will be deleted after the merge. Information in the Location Details window for the first Location will be lost.
-
Any jobs, charges, or incidents which were linked to the first Location will now be linked to the second Location. If you reprint an invoice with a charge related to the first Location, it will show the second Location instead.
-
Once you merge two Locations they cannot be separated again.
If the original Location was added by your alarm monitoring software, or SmartNet, it may be added back again. To prevent this, ensure that your alarm monitoring software or SmartNet customer is using the same site code as your second Location.
ADSW Functionality
If you have ADSW (alarm monitoring) integration enabled on your Smart installation, two additional buttons will be visible at lower right of the main Sites list.
- ADSW takes you to a series of windows which are used to set up ADSW.
- Modem Search allows you to list only those locations with a matching modem number (or IP address). Press the button and enter all or part of the modem number you wish to search for. To clear the search, press the F4 button.
